Cables
The cables in this hat are easy to work without a cable needle.
T2R: K into front of second knit stitch and leave stitch on left needle. K first stitch and slip both onto right needle.
T2L: K into back of second knit stich (from back) and leave stitch on left needle. K into back of first stitch and slip both onto right needle.
If you feel more comfortable using a cable needle, try this:
T2R = C2B: Sl 1 st to cable needle (cn), hold in back. K1, K1 from cn.
T2L = C2F: Sl 1 st to cn, hold in front. K1, K1 from cn.

Join yarn, being careful not to twist, and place marker.
Work K2, P2 ribbing for 10 rows.
Round 1: (T2R, P2)* repeat to end.
Rounds 2, 3, 4: (K2, P2)* repeat to end.

Next round: (T2R, P2)* repeat to end.
Decrease:
Row 1: (K2, P2tog)* repeat to end. 51 sts.

I'm confused on your pattern for the cranberry one. It seems to me by looking at the photo that the cables and space between then are equal but the pattern has 3 rounds between each cable and 5 rounds between the repeat which would make the middle part bigger than the cables above and below. Maybe I'm just reading it wrong but the picture and pattern don't seem to match.

After zooming in it does look like the are 5 rounds there after all. I will continue to follow the pattern and see how it turns out. Thanks again and sorry to question your pattern...lack of sleep probably lol
I followed the pattern for Cranberry and got a different hat. Not sure what I did wrong. I only have two repeats of the pattern with a large swatch of ribbing in between the two. Any Ideas? BTW, it looks great this way, too.
Just finished making the gray hat and now anxious to try the cranberry hat as well. Such an easy and fast pattern, so thank you for the inspiration....
