you could always finish the socks for you and every time you wear them you'll feel especially close to your grampy.
I did that with a pair of slippers for my nan. I felt sad and regret for not finishing them for her - now when I wear them I know she's smiling...

When my grandfather passed away the very kind funeral home director, who had know Gramps years ago, told me that he was, "The kind of man a man was meant to be."
Judging from your grandfather's obituary, it sounds like he was that kind of man too.
