Feeling the heat

So I leave for home on Saturday at noon. In 36 very short hours, I'll be standing at the car rental joint, fingers crossed, holding my breath while they run my card (let's not talk about it, shall we?) and pray, pray, praying that it goes through so I can get my rental. I've used every bad word I know and money still isn't falling from the sky.

To add aggravation to injury, the phone rang today. I couldn't bring myself to answer. I'm sure his intentions are good, but I cannot afford a hit to my confidence or another present. I need to somehow defer meeting up until after Christmas. (I'm sure you know bad words. Insert them here. I've said them all.) Gah.

* * * * *

I went to see The Pursuit of Happyness tonight. So good. A bit long, but so good.

Also awesome -- Little Miss Sunshine. Steve Carell is perfect, as is Paul Dano as Dwayne. The entire family is just so beautifully dysfunctional.

The only bad thing about renting a car (I mean, other than the panic attack at the counter) is not being able to knit and drive at the same time. I mean, it's great that I can't (imagine what the knitting would look like! ha!), but still. I could use the time.

Here's my knits-to-do list:

1.5 Fetching (in a putrescent, fluorescent fuschia)
1.75 hats
1.75 socks
0.80 of the handle for my sister's booga + felting.

Priority-wise, one of the hats comes first...but not the one I've already started. Hmm. Should get on that. I've also got to figure out what to do for my father's lady friend. Jammies again? I was going to knit her a pair of felted slippers, but I'm clearly f*?cked for time.

I should really add Grampy's socks to the 'to do' list. His birthday is Jan 6, so maybe I can finish them before I come back to town. There's only the foot left...

Speaking of coming back -- I'm going to be home for a week. A full week. I haven't been home for that long at once in, oh, almost ten years. Those of you who pray, please do. The rest of you -- please send diet pepsi and yarn. Or chips. Chips are always good. I'm going to need them.

I'm planning to take lots of fun knitting with me. A couple of pairs of socks for me, I think, and maybe the wobbly circles bag. We'll see. There's no cable or internet at Mum's (although there's both at her beau's place), so I'll need something to distract me from my allergies and any residual tension. That reminds me...must call in my prescription...

I'm packing books too. Never Have Your Dog Stuffed (Alan Alda), Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw (Will Ferguson), A Prayer for Owen Meany (John Irving) and maybe Snow (Orhan Pamuk). My book group picked it for next month. If I can get my quackers in a row, I might pick it up from my local independent bookstore before I leave town. We'll see.

I'm also, deep breath, taking my writing home. I'm really hoping that I'll have a chance to drive out to the area I'm writing about...hoping the little cemetery will inspire me again. If not the cemetery, then maybe the river. Fingers crossed. It's worked before.

* * * * *

More tomorrow, hopefully with pictures of more finished presents. Have I mentioned that I also have baking, packing and visiting to do in the next 36 hours?

PS: The house still looks like crap.

There's nothing like going home for the holidys huh? Good luck completing your knitting, hope the credit card goes through. At least now, when you go home, if things are… you know… you can always knit.

Last time I went home for Christmas was also for my 40th birthday. My 4 older sisters ate my cake before I got a piece, forgot to sing happy birthday and gave me baby yellow pyjamas with kittens on them… kittens… enough said. Have Fun!!

This is good. Your holiday stress has just oozed out onto your blog and out into the ether where it disperse itself amongst the flotsam of the internet. Now you are free to prioritize what is important to you, set boundaries to protect yourself, and to have a good time. :-)

Best of luck!

That sounds like one enormous pile of stress descending all at once. My rule for visiting Mom is a strict 3 day limit. I had to break that last year when she broke her leg very badly and my sisters and I each took a turn caring for her for a week. Oi.

You'll be in my thoughts, I hope things go smoothly for you!

A Prayer for Owen Meany is one of my favourite books. John Irving is always endlessly entertaining. Reading is wonderful.

I think that "someone" should go suck an egg and not worry so much about what other people are doing/not doing. I think people should do a bit of self-examination before placing too much judgement on others.

I almost peed my pants at Little Miss Sunshine. It was perfect.

What do you mean you can't knit and drive? I think that you mean that you *shouldn't* knit and drive. Okay, knowing both your starting and ending points, I will grant you that you won't have much of a chance to knit, but be sure to have a small project sitting next to you - just in case. It's what I do as I sit waiting at lights or in "rush" hour traffic!
